Week 4 Acting Styles - Goodfellas

The movie Goodfellas has many famous actors in it. There are different types of actors and I am going to talk about three different types of them.

Robert Deniro would be considered a wild card actor. He has had many different roles, in many different types of films. We see him place high ranking mafia members in different Scorsese movies, and we see him play that terrifying father in law in the comedy Meet the Parents. His personality and acting background gives him the skills to be able to adapt to whatever film he is making. He can fit any role and he always plays them well.

Ray Liotta is an impersonator. In this film, which is a heavy mafia film, Ray does not sell me at all that he belongs in the environment that he is in. I can say the same for the film Field of Dreams. Its not that I think he is a bad actor, I am just never sold on his performances. This might be a reason why he is doing Tequila commercials nowadays.

Joe Pesci is a perfect personality actor. While not everyone will agree with this statement, I beg to differ. I think Pesci is extremely funny. Every film I see him in he is always the actor that I am laughing at the most. But in my opinion, his acting is very average. I do not believe that his acting skills are all that great, and that he relies on his humor to make his characters likable.

Wizard of Oz - Sound

There are three basic categories of sounds. The first one is dialogue. Dialogue is the conversation and interaction between characters. Sound effects are the sounds in a film that add to the mood and tone of each scene. They are very important in making the film exciting and to help keep the viewers interested.  Music is the third basic category of sound in a film. All three of these are important in making a successful film.

In The Wizard of Oz, there is dialogue throughout the entire movie. All of the characters interact with and converse with each other as the film goes on and the characters develop relationships with each other. There are amazing sound effects in this movie as well. We live in a world in which we can shoot and edit movies on our smartphones and e–mail them to our friends.  film came out in 1939, so they did not have as much technology to work with as we have currently. The sound effects for the tornado were awesome and very realistic. The music sets the tone for each scene. This film developed many famous songs that became sing alongs for children as they were growing up.

Knocked Up - Lighting

The lighting in this film is traditional three point lighting. This style of lighting is used to keep things as normal as possible. Nothing is meant to stand out, however there are different scenes in the movie where different styles of lighting are used. Bar Scene In this scene, the bar is very dark and you need brighter lights to show what the main characters are doing and to make them stand out a little more from the rest of the people in the scene.

Rocky

Rocky (1976) Director: John G. Avildsen Writer: Sylvester Stallone Stars: Sylvester Stallone – Rocky Balboa Talia Shire - Adrian Burt Young – Paulie Carl Weathers – Apollo Creed Rocky takes place in Philadelphia. Rocky Balboa is a struggling boxer trying to make the big time, working as a debt collector for a pittance. Heavyweight champ Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), the film’s proxy for Muhammed Ali, is pissed that his opponent for a much-hyped bicentennial match has pulled out with a last-minute injury. His team comes across Rocky and thinks it’s a great idea that they try to get him for the match. A local guy gets his shot is the angle that they are using, since the fight takes place in Philadelphia. Rocky has never had a shot like this. He goes to his boxing club to train with his old trainer, Mickey. It seems that Mickey does not want anything to do with him at first, but then realizing how big of an opportunity this is, he changes his mind. Rocky trains hard and goes the distance with the champ, causing controversy when Apollo wins the fight due to a split decision. This film is presented chronologically. I think this is really the only way that this story could have been told, because it would have been too confusing if it kept going back and forth. When you are telling a story about a boxing match, this is the perfect way to tell it. It also works well with the development of the characters. Since no one knows anything about any of them, starting at the beginning and moving forward seems like the right way. Especially if you ever watch the rest of the Rocky movies, it seems that Rocky Balboa becomes smarter as the movies go on.
